Surgery or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines aren't the only options if you have sleep apnea. Dentists offer a comfortable low-tech alternative that's very effective in decreasing sleep apnea symptoms. Our Leawood, KS, dentists, Dr. Nancy Addy and Dr. Jarret Grosdidier of Snoring and Sleep Apnea Dental Treatment Center, discuss sleep apnea and share information on a dental appliance that can ease your symptoms.
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when you stop breathing many times during the night. Every time you stop breathing, your brain is deprived of oxygen. Although each breathing pause may only last a few seconds, the cumulative effect of oxygen deprivation can have a serious impact on your health. Breathing pauses occur when your airway closes temporarily. The problem may occur if the wall of your throat become too relaxed and collapse when you sleep or may happen if your tongue blocks your airway. If your condition isn't treated, you're more likely to diabetes or high blood pressure, plus your risk of premature death to a stroke or heart disease increases.
How can I tell if I have sleep apnea?
A sleep study is best way to tell if you have sleep apnea, but there are a few clues that may indicate that you have the condition, such as:
- Loud snoring
- Gasping, choking or jerking awake at night
- Daytime sleepiness
- Morning headaches
- Difficulty concentrating at work or school
- Irritability
- Depression
- Weight gain
How can my dentist help me?
Do you feel like a failure because you just can't get used to a CPAP machine? If you find CPAP masks uncomfortable or think the machines advertised as "quiet" just aren't quiet enough, you aren't alone. Not everyone can make the adjustment to sleeping with the machine. Luckily, an oral appliance worn while you sleep can reduce your symptoms. The device, offered in our Leawood office, holds your jaw forward, which helps open your airway and prevents your tongue from falling back into your throat.
Have you been looking for a better way to address your sleep apnea symptoms? An oral appliance may be the solution to your problem. Call our Leawood, KS, dentists, Dr. Addy and Dr. Grosdidier of Snoring and Sleep Apnea Dental Treatment Center, at (913) 451-2929 to schedule an appointment.
